Can Dundar was born in Ankara. He is a journalist, author and filmmaker. In 1979 he took on a career in journalism and initially worked for various newspapers and magazines before switching to television in 1988 and presenting the main news. He has made documentaries on contemporary Turkish history and cultural anthropology and has written over 40 books in Turkey. As editor-in-chief of the country's most renowned and oldest newspaper, the Cumhuriyet, he was arrested for reporting how the Turkish secret service illegally supplied weapons to jihadists in Syria. For this he was sentenced to life imprisonment and was finally sentenced to 27 years in prison. An armed attack was carried out on him in 2016 and he has lived in exile in Germany ever since. Here he shoots documentaries for ZDF and ARTE, among others. He writes regularly for Die ZEIT and the Washington Post. Dündar received the Hermann Kesten and Gustav Heinemann Prizes, as well as awards from Reporters Without Borders, PEN, the Committee for the Protection of Journalists CPJ, Netzwerk Recherche and was made an honorary citizen of Paris. In Berlin he runs the online magazine and web radio #ÖZGÜRÜZ, which was founded together with CORRECTIV.
