Lecture by Harald Havas

The long history of comics is rich in Jewish themes - from the most diverse perspectives ranging from anti-Semitic propaganda comics of the interwar period to the world-famous Holocaust comic "Maus" by Art Spiegelman. Additionally, many of the medium's best-known comics and comic characters were created by Jewish artists and/or authors. This applies to early newspaper strips, superheroes such as Superman, Batman and nearly all Marvel heroes as well as Europe's number one comic hero Asterix. The lecture addresses these aspects and also poses the question of whether and to what extent the creations of Jewish comic artists can be traced back to Judaism and Jewish traditions.
