Andrea Heinze in conversation with Birgit Weyhe
Artist Birgit Weyhe, who spent her childhood and youth in East Africa, is one of a new generation of German cartoonists who are setting their own aesthetic impulses in the comic landscape. Her comics are as universal as they are human. They deal with topics such as black empowerment, the living and working conditions of Mozambican contract workers in the GDR or her own family history. This is striking because Birgit Weyhe portrays people from all over the world and from very different cultures as perceptively as she does free of conventions. Her latest work "Rude Girl" is nominated for this year' s Max und Moritz Award.
