"DOKU - the self" is the first narrative film by Chinese media artist LuYang, revealing the backstory of his digital reincarnation DOKU. The avatar bears the artist's facial features and lives in a world strongly influenced by Buddhist ideas and symbols. As a result of a near-death experience caused by the impending crash of an airplane, LuYang aka DOKU questions existence. His thoughts lead him through various Buddhist-inspired worlds. The search for insight moves him to leave everything behind - including his virtual body.

The film, which was recently shown for the first time in public at the Venice Art Biennale, celebrates its German premiere on the occasion of LuYang's exhibition at the Kunstpalais Erlangen.
