In 1991, two years after the fall of the Wall, a comic-enthusiastic East Berlin schoolboy put his first comic pages on the photocopier of the Protestant church parish, reached for the stapler and then distributed his DIY comic books to friends and family. Today, 30 years later, Markus "Mawil" Witzel is one of the most distinguished and active comic artists on the German scene. Mawil had his breakthrough in 2003 with the bittersweet break-up tale "Wir können ja Freunde bleiben". His depiction of a childhood in East Berlin on the eve of the fall of the Wall, "Kinderland", received the Max und Moritz Award for "Best German-language Comic" in 2014. In 2019, he was the first German comic artist to be allowed to illustrate the ageless cowboy Lucky Luke, and in 2021, Mawil was honoured with the prestigious Wilhem Busch Prize for satirical and humorous draughtsmanship and verse. The exhibition shows original drawings, objects, sketches, published and discarded works, memorabilia and other works from three decades of his creative work.
