Das kleine Schwarze. Wedekind, Mahler und die nackte Ikone einer Zeit

Just in time for the 100th anniversary of Kazimir Malevich's Black Square (1915), Viennese comic artist Nicolas Mahler served up "Lulu und das schwarze Quadrat", a popular culture distillation of Frank Wedekind's notorious tragedies "Erdgeist" (1895) and "Pandora's Box" (1902), congenially fused with the icon of modern painting. Advertised as a "black comedy about female corporeality, male possessiveness and Kazimir Malevich's Black Square", "Lulu und das schwarze Quadrat" is a radically compact staging of Wedekind's tragedy that is taken to its comedic extreme. Starting with an analysis of the expressive cover, the lecture will take a closer look at the role of Lulu and that of femininity in Mahler's adaptation.
