JOSEP (FR/ES 2020)

In February 1939, 500,000 people flee dictator Franco from Spain to southern France, where they are interned by the French government in inhumane camps. Among them is the artist and resistance fighter Josep Bartolí (1910-1995). He befriends Serge, a young camp guard who later helps him escape. Inspired by the drawings which Bartolí made in the camp, French cartoonist Aurel created a very special narrative style in his directorial debut: sketchy and fleeting, the memories of the aged Serge are portrayed, foreshadowing the horrors of the time. JOSEP was screened at numerous film festivals and won several awards, including a César and the European Film Award for "Best Animated Film".
