Catherine Meurisse's "Modern Olympia" (2014) is a complex graphic narrative about the Musée d'Orsay and its artworks that rewrites or rather draws feminist art and museum history. The supporting character Félicité adapts the representation of the Woman of Colour from Édouard Manet's oil painting "Olympia" (1863) and reacts to the contemporary reception history of the 19th century, to its art historical interpretation of the 20th century as well as to the Franco-Belgian comic tradition. The focus is on dealing with intersectional discrimination under the signs of postcolonialism and racism, classism and sexism. Instead of reproducing these, Meurisse creates a parodic counter-design, inverts power relations and thus gives Félicité agency.
